How to Prepare for an MCITP Certification Exam

Tony,

I saw you as one of the authors of the Microsoft Self-Paced Training for MCITP Enterprise Administrator series from Microsoft Press.  I visited your personal website and really liked your photography as well… Very impressive.

Anyhow, I digress… I’m not really writing to talk about photography, though I could.  My question is about MCITP training and certification.  You have a substantial history and experience in training/writing about Microsoft certifications.  I’m moving up in my employer’s organization and I’m tasked with getting my certification.  I had my MCSE 2000, but it’s time to upgrade my skills.

As someone new to Win2008 (specifically R2) do you have any hints, tips, suggestions for getting GOOD training, but also receiving certification.  I’m purchasing the Microsoft Press self-paced series that you’re one of the authors of, but I’m looking for more as well… By no means am I suggesting your books aren’t great… they are!  But I’m one who looks for help from many angles (even emailing the author, as you can see).  Any guidance you may have is much appreciated.

Regards,

And my answer:

Of course, real-world experience is the best teacher. Sounds like you have quite a bit of that already. If there’s some area where you don’t have enough real-world experience, setup different scenarios with virtual machines, and make it actually work (without following step-by-step instructions like those in the Training Kits).

I like to read the TechNet blogs. They’re written by the guys writing the software, so you tend to get a deeper understanding of how the technologies work. I also like to check out different IT forums to see where people are running into problems in the real-world.

The #1 resource for MCITP certifications, though, is TechNet. Not only is it one of the best technical resources, but it seems to be the place where the people writing the questions get their inspiration. Note that I don’t have any inside knowledge on how they write the questions–I’m saying this based on my own experiences taking the certification tests.

Hope that helps! And thanks for the compliment on my other passion. 😀

Disks formatted with the FAT file system can be accessed by MS-DOS, all versions of Windows, and OS/2. The maximum supported volume size is 4 GB, the maximum file size is 2 GB.

The faster file system FAT32, is often used in multi-boot situations with operating systems that do not support NTFS. Disks formatted with the FAT32 file system are supported by Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98 and ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Windows NT 4 and earlier cannot access FAT32 volumes. The maximum supported volume size for FAT32 is 2 TB, but Windows XP can format up to 32 GB only. The maximum file size is 4 GB. The minimum size for a FAT32 volume is 512 MB. You cannot format removable media such as floppy disks with Disks formatted with NTFS version 5 can only be accessed by Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or higher, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. NTFS supports a volume size over 2 TB and the maximum file size is limited only by the available free space. You cannot format removable media such as floppy disks with NTFS. Besides being able to handle large disks, free practice exam questions

NTFS is the preferred file system for Windows 2000 and XP because of the extra features it offers, including:
– File and folder permissions (discussed below)
– File and folder compression (discussed below)
– Encrypted File System (EFS) (see EFS Certkingdom)
– Disk Quotas Allows quotas to be assigned to users for disk space usages per volume.

Quotas are only available on NTFS volumes and can be enabled and configured on the Quotatab on a volumes Properties sheet. This is the file system used on compact discs. You cannot format regular disks with this file system.
Converting File Systems.

You can convert FAT file systems to NTFS using the following command: convert c: /fs:ntfs The convert utility cannot be used to convert from NTFS to another file system. For example if you converted a FAT32 partition to NTFS and you want to revert it back to FAT32,you will have to create a full backup, reformat the drive with FAT32, and restore the backup.
FILE AND FOLDER COMPRESSION.

NTFS Compression allows compression of individual files and folders, as well as entire NTFS drives. The process of compression and decompression is transparent to the user. For example, when a user opens a document from a NTFS compressed disk, the document is decompressed automatically, when the user saves the document it is compressed again. Thisprocess might decrease your computers performance; its best to compress static data and only if it really saves space, you dont want to waste CPU cycles compressing a ZIPfile for example. An NTFS-compressed file cannot be encrypted, and an encrypted file cannot be compressed. If you do enable compression for an encrypted file, the file will lose its encryption attribute before it is compressed.

You can enable compression for a volume when you format it. To enable compression on an existing volume, right-click it and choose Properties from the context menu, on theGeneral tab enable the option Compress drive to save disk space. To compress a file or folder, right-click it and choose Properties from the context menu, click the Advanced button and below Compress and Encrypt attributes enable the option Compress contents to save disk space. When you enable compression on a folder or volume, Windows will ask if you want to enable compression for all the files and subfolders in the folder or volume as well. Besides using Windows Exporer, you can also use the command compact to compress or decompress a file or folder.

Windows 7 Family Pack Makes a Comeback

Microsoft on Sunday resurrected the Windows 7 Family Pack. For $149.99, the bundle provides upgrade licenses to Windows 7 Home Premium for up to three devices.

To upgrade, however, the computers must already be running on either Windows Vista or XP systems and they must be capable of handling Windows 7.

At the full list price, buying the Family Pack will cost users about $180 less than it would to buy separate licenses for three computers. It’s available in the Microsoft online store and at participating retailers. Amazon.com sells the bundle for a little bit cheaper than most at $139.99. Microsoft didn’t indicate a specific end date for the sale of the pack and just said it was available “while supplies last.”

After Oct. 22 – the one-year anniversary of the Windows 7 launch – the family pack option will be offered in Canada, the U.K., Germany, France, Australia and other international markets.

The upgrade includes a few new features. Users will be able to utilize the tools that are a part of Windows Live Essential 2011. Programs including Windows Live Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Messenger, Mail, Family Safety, and Writer on Live Essentials will allow users to share and manage content. Also, the addition of Windows Live Mesh keeps content connected across different devices and via the Web.

The Family Pack was previously available last fall, from the end of October through December.
